About docray
The docray Dream
It was 4th May 2007 and I had just finished teaching at Robbie Stewart's Golf Academy at ERPM. Somehow Friday sunsets and their accompanying refreshments provide the ideal platform to reflect on one's endeavours for the week. It was at this time that Robbie made a comment which was to convince me of the need for mental skills training among our young golfers. As a dedicated coach he had been sitting in on the mental skills programme I was presenting to his students. "If I had known what you are teaching these kids my entire career would have been different. It would have changed my life" he said. These words were from a respected professional.
A while later I presented a workshop to some young provincial golfers at the picturesque Orkney Golf Club. The enthusiasm and appreciation for the subject matter was remarkable. These events together with numerous queries from professional players and parents finally saw the creation of docray.
Golfers in South Africa are subject to a plethora of information relating to the latest equipment via all means of media and often at no cost. So too is an abundance of information relating to the latest golf estates, golfing holidays or rules interpretations available. The situation as regards basic mental skills for the game is different. Those interested in such have either to purchase material or consult with someone in this regard. Why I asked myself, should this information not be freely available to all golfers in South Africa?
Far too little attention is paid to this aspect of the game. In 1997 Dr. Bob Rotella rightly asked the question as to why in 15 years the average American golfer's handicap had not come down in spite of all the technical developments which had taken place in the game. docray has been created to provide our nation's golfers access to information on the mental skills necessary to play to one's full potential via a fortnightly newsletter.
